Self-Discipline - 5 Steps to taking action

Bruce A. Carlson speech - 3/16/14

  1. Acceptance
  2. Willpower
  3. Hard Work
  4. Industry
  5. Persistence

  1. Acceptance - where do we stand right now? Our new starting point.
  2. Willpower - learn what I can and cannot do. This is the spearhead of self-discipline. It is like the airplane afterburner. It is your ability to set a course and stay engaged. It isn't for a sustained period, but it is what helps in a pinch.
  3. Hard Work - get work that challenges you. The fewer people willing to do it, the more opportunity. The big secret is that there is no big secret.
  4. Industry - putting in the time. Don't need to be creative about it. Do the difficult work and where it is needed.
  5. Persistent - sustained action regardless of feelings. Action - creates results - motivation.

The miracle of forgiveness - self- abandonment. Master yourself and you shall be king.

Try and Try again.

Social Sciences share that those that have more self-control are happier.

George Albert Smith

Selfies

The word of the year was "selfies."

It shows the narcissism of some in using social media.

We lose focus on things that matter most - focus on others.

Being self-abosrbed stunts personal spiritual growth.

Service increases the opportunity for personal revelation.

Focus on self impedes revelation.

- Talk by Paul V. Johnson -

Changing our nature

"Service projects aren't enough to change our nature. We need to do that which changes our souls."

"We make more spiritual progress when we serve others."

Modern Inspiration

"God inspires men now as He did in times past."

This includes revelation...

Revelation

"Revelation comes by faith and ...great anxiety."

Habits

"Habits decide your future, people don't."

Can't see it

"They don't see it, so they don't believe it."

Tied to your "Yes"

Who is tied to your "Yes?'

Your willingness to take a step.

Your willingness to pursue a goal.

Your taking action.

Your influence.

Prattle

"Mere prattle without practice is all his soldiership." Iago

Why is it so hard to say "I don't know?"
